In una gelida Ottobiano è andato in scena il secondo round degli Internazionali d’Italia MX EICMA Series 2019.
Dopo le abbondanti precipitazioni nevose cadute sul tracciato nei giorni precedenti la gara, la pista si presentava in condizioni molto difficili, con la superficie sabbiosa segnata da profondi canali e buche insidiose. Antonio Cairoli, che a causa di una brutta influenza che lo ha colpito durante la settimana precedente la gara, è giunto ad Ottobiano in condizioni fisiche non ottimali, ha fatto segnare il secondo miglior tempo nelle prove cronometrate, a un secondo e mezzo dalla pole position.
Partito terzo nella gara della MX1, il pilota del team Red Bull KTM Factory Racing, rallentato nella sua azione da qualche linea di febbre e da una fastidiosa bronchite, ha impiegato qualche giro a trovare il ritmo, ritrovandosi a metà gara terzo, con otto secondi di distacco dalla prima posizione. E’ proprio in quel momento che i suoi tempi sul giro hanno cominciato a calare vertiginosamente e che in poche tornate Tony si è portato alle spalle del duo di testa, passandoli nei due giri successivi, andando a cogliere la terza vittoria stagionale.
Nella gara finale della Supercampione Cairoli, con la sua KTM 450 SX-F, TC222 è partito in testa, cercando di imporre il suo ritmo sin dalle prime curve; Gajser però non lo ha mollato e a quattro giri da termine, approfittando di un doppiaggio difficile, lo ha passato. Il nove volte iridato in due giri ha recuperato e, a due tornate dalla fine, ha sferrato l’attacco decisivo, andando a vincere la gara e, virtualmente, il titolo della classe, con due vittorie e un risultato da scartare sulle tre gare che compongono la serie internazionale. Prossimo e ultimo appuntamento con gli Internazionali, tra sette giorni, sulla pista di Mantova.
Antonio Cairoli: “E’ stata una gara molto difficile, su una pista molto segnata, piena di canali e buche. Oggi mi sentivo bene, ma la settimana è stata molto difficile, visto che fino a venerdì sera ho avuto la febbre e non ho potuto allenarmi fino a sabato mattina, quando sono riuscito a correre un po’. Nella prima manche la mia partenza è stata buona, non la migliore ma comunque pur sempre tra i primi cinque; ho cercato di seguire i piloti davanti e una volta trovato un buon ritmo, sono stato in grado di passarli e di vincere la manche. Nella seconda manche ho fatto l’hole-shot e ho provato a fare un buon ritmo, ma Tim (Gajser) guidava molto bene e mi ha seguito tutto il tempo, fino a tre giri dalla fine, quando ho commesso un piccolo errore passando un doppiato ed è riuscito a passarmi. Ho spinto forte per ripassarlo e per cercare di vincere la gara e per fortuna ci sono riuscito; ora, con questa vittoria tutto quello che devo fare è prendere parte alla gara della prossima settimana a Mantova, per vincere nuovamente la serie degli Internazionali d’Italia, dato che possiamo scartare un risultato su tre, tenendo le due vittorie.”
INTMX Ottobiano: Antonio Cairoli wins in Ottobiano
An icy Ottobiano hosted the second round of the Internazionali d’Italia MX EICMA Series 2019. With abundant snowfall hitting the track in the days leading up to the race, the sandy track presented itself in very difficult shape, with the sandy surface marked by deep ruts and tricky bumps.
Antonio Cairoli, arrived in Ottobiano well below 100% healthy, due to a bad flu that hit him during the week leading up to the race, however he still scored the second best time in timed practice, a second and a half from the pole position! In the MX1 race the Red Bull KTM Factory Racing Team rider started third, slowed down by some stubborn flu symptoms and an annoying bronchitis, and took a few laps to find the flow, finding himself third at the mid point, eight seconds behind the leader. It was at that point that his lap times began to drop dramatically and within a few laps Tony moved up behind the leading pair, passing them in the following two laps, taking his third win of the season.
In the final race of the Supercampione, Cairoli, with his KTM 450 SX-F, grabbed the hole-shot, trying to impose his rhythm on the field. Gajser, however, didn’t give up and at four laps to the end passed him, taking advantage of a small mistake from TC. The nine times World Champion recovered within two laps and, two laps before the end, passed back, going on to win the race and, virtually, the title of the class, with two victories in the bag and a result to be discarded of the three races that make up the international series. Next and last appointment with the Internazionali, will be hosted on the Mantova track, in seven days.
Antonio Cairoli: “It was a very difficult race on a tricky circuit that had a lot of ruts and bumps. I felt ok today but the week was very difficult as I was sick until Friday night with a fever. I couldn’t train and it wasn’t until Saturday morning before I could run a little bit. In the first moto my start was good, not the best but still in the top five. I tried to follow the guys ahead and once I got into a good rhythm I was able to take the moto win. In the second moto I got the hole-shot and tried to settle into my own rhythm, but Tim (Gajser) was riding very good. He tailed me and when I made a small mistake, passing a back marker, he managed to pass me with only three laps to go. I tried everything I had to pass him back to try to win the race and thankfully I managed it. With this win all I need do is start next week’s race in Mantova to win the Internazionali d’Italia series again, which is always a good accomplishment for me, as we can drop one result from the three races leaving me with the two victories.”
