Il primo Gran Premio dell’anno ha avuto un inizio difficile per Tony Cairoli, che è arrivato in Argentina ben preparato e pronto a correre dopo gli ottimi risultati ottenuti negli Internazionali d’Italia.

Il nove volte Campione del Mondo ha portato a termine due buone sessioni di prove, centrando due quinti posti, lavorando più sul ritmo di gara che sulla massima velocità. Nella gara di qualifica del sabato la sua partenza non è stata buona e Antonio ha dovuto spingere forte per rimontare, raggiungendo la top ten, prima che la sua moto si fermasse a metà della prima curva dopo il traguardo, nel corso del quarto giro, rifiutandosi di ripartire. 

Tony non ha potuto fare altro che spingere la moto fuori pista, aspettando fino al mattino seguente prima di poter guidare di nuovo. Dopo aver ottenuto un incoraggiante primo posto nel warm-up, Cairoli è andato al ventottesimo cancello alla partenza della prima manche ed ha dimostrato, ancora una volta, quanto forte sia al via, centrando un quarto posto alla prima curva, pur partendo dall’esterno.

Spingendo con straordinaria foga ha preso il comando della gara, prima che fosse completato il primo giro, guidando la manche fino alla fine e tagliando il traguardo per primo dopo diciannove giri. La seconda partenza non è stata altrettanto buona, ma il pilota del Team KTM Red Bull Factory Racing è riuscito a recuperare dal settimo al terzo posto nel primo giro, per poi colmare il gap con Gajser e Febvre, superandoli durante il sesto giro, con un incredibile doppio sorpasso che ha infiammato il pubblico argentino.

Cairoli è transitato primo ancora una volta sotto la bandiera a scacchi ottenendo una doppietta che gli ha consegnato la tabella rossa per la sua KTM 450 SX-F, 50 punti e la prima vittoria del MXGP di Patagonia-Argentina, l’ottantaseiesima della sua incredibile carriera, portando così a 16 il numero degli anni consecutivi in cui si è aggiudicato almeno un Gran Premio!

Antonio Cairoli: “Nel complesso oggi sono soddisfatto, perché dopo il problema di ieri con la moto non ero sicuro di come sarebbero andate le partenze. Qui è molto importante stare con quelli davanti fin dall’inizio della manche, perché non c’è molta differenza nei tempi sul giro e recuperare è davvero difficile. Per fortuna sono riuscito a fare una buona partenza in entrambe le manche, nella prima ero nei primi cinque ed ho potuto lottare per prendere il comando subito. Nella seconda manche ero un po’ più indietro, quindi ho dovuto lottare duramente per arrivare fino al terzo posto nel primo giro; poi ho potuto guardare alcune delle buone tracce di quelli che mi precedevano e ho potuto attaccare per passarli, fare una buona gara e aggiudicarmi l’assoluta. Sono davvero felice di aver finalmente ottenuto la vittoria su questa pista e di fronte a questo pubblico fantastico che è sempre così affettuoso e chiassoso attorno alla pista.”

The first Grand Prix of the year was a tough start for Tony Cairoli, who arrived in Argentina well prepared and ready to race after strong pre season races. The nine time World Champion had two solid practice sessions, with a pair of 5^th place finishes, as he looked more for race pace than outright top speed. In Saturday’s qualifying race his start wasn’t good and Antonio had to push hard to come back trough the pack, eventually rejoining the top ten group of riders, before his bike stalled in the middle of the first corner, refusing to restart.

Tony could only push the bike off the track and wait until the following morning before being able to ride again. After an encouraging first place in the warm-up, Cairoli picked the twenty-eighth gate at the start of the first moto and proved, once again, how good his starts can be, scoring a top four from the outside.

Pushing with extraordinary strength he took the lead of the race before the first lap was completed, leading the moto till the end and crossing the finish line first after nineteen laps. The second start was not quite as good but the KTM Red Bull Factory Racing Team rider managed to recover from seventh to third on the first lap and then to close down the gap with Gajser and Febvre, overtaking them with an incredible double pass that set the Argentinian crowd alight during the sixth lap. Cairoli took the chequers once again and scored a double victory that gives him the red plate for his KTM 450 SX-F and 50 points and the first victory of the MXGP of Patagonia-Argentina, the 86th of his incredible career.

Antonio Cairoli: “Overall I’m happy today, because after yesterday’s mishap with the bike I was not sure about how the starts would go. Here it’s very important to stay with the guys at the front right from the beginning of the moto, because there is not much difference in the lap times and recovery is really difficult. Thankfully I managed to get a good start in both motos, in the first I was in the top five and I could fight to take the lead. In the second moto I was a little bit further back so I had to fight really hard to come up to fourth place on the first lap and then I could watch some of the good lines from the guys in front and I could make the pass, having a good race and taking the overall. I’m really happy to finally get this victory on this track and in front of this fantastic crowd who are always so warm and loud around the track.”
