Durante l’MXGP di Francia, l’americano Thomas Covington ha annunciato che lascerà la classe MX2 per tornare in USA nel 2019.

Covington ha recentemente firmato un accordo con il team Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing di Bobby Hewitt per sostituire Zach Osborne che passrà nella classe 450 a partire nel 2019. Covington non ha mai corso professionalmente negli Stati Uniti. È passato direttamente dagli ‘Amateurs’ ai GP quando è diventato Pro nel 2014.

L’anno scorso ha fatto registrare la sua miglior stagione con un 4° posto nella classe MX2. Covington prevede di gareggiare sia nel campionato Supercross che nel campionato di Motocross il prossimo anno. Con l’aiuto di Aldon Baker e della sua esperienza in MXGP, la sua nuova squadra ha grandi speranze di poterlo vedere davanti con i migliori piloti 250.

Ecco cosa ha detto Covington sulla sua permanenza nei GP e sulla sua decisione di tornare in America: “È stata una decisione difficile per me e tutti sanno quanto io ami i GP e tutta la gente qui, ma per il modo in cui è andata [allora] è nel migliore interesse di tutti tornare indietro la prossima stagione”, ha detto. “Correre in GP mi ha reso un pilota più completo in molte situazioni. Sono davvero contento di aver deciso di venire quando avevo 17-18 anni. È stata un’esperienza fantastica e la ripeterei assolutamente, penso di essere meglio preparato ora per il supercross rispetto a quando sono appena uscito dai dilettanti.”

THOMAS COVINGTON RETURNING TO U.S. IN 2019

During the MXGP of France Thomas Covington announced that he would be leaving the MX2 Class to return home in 2019. Covington recently signed a deal with Bobby Hewitt’s Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing Team to replace Zach Osborne who will be moving up to the 450 Class starting in 2019. Covington has never raced in professionally in the USA. He went straight from the Amateurs over to the GP’s when he turned Pro in 2014. Last year he had his best season finishing 4th overall in the MX2 Class. Covington plans to compete in both the Supercross and Motocross Championships next year. With the help of Aldon Baker and his MXGP experience his new team has high hopes that he will be able to run up front with the top 250 Riders. Here is what Covington had to say about his time in the GP’s and his decision to make the move to back to America.

“It was a tough decision for me and everyone knows how much I love the GPs and all the people here but with the way it worked out [then] it was in everybody’s best interests to go back next season,” he said. “Racing the GPs made me a more well-rounded rider in many situations. I’m really glad I decided to come when I was 17-18. It has been an awesome experience and I would not take it back for anything and I think I am better prepared now for supercross compared to when I just came out of the amateurs.”
